Customers will receive only 200 liters of petrol and diesel per day

June 13, 2026 2 Min Read

The Central Government has imposed new restrictions on the sale of petrol and diesel, issuing an order that limits fuel supply to a maximum of 200 liters per vehicle per day. Additionally, a mandate has been introduced requiring that fuel sold for purposes other than direct vehicle refueling be dispensed only in containers approved by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO). However, the unavailability of such containers in the market has created confusion among petrol pump operators and farmers alike.
The Gulf War has impacted the production and transportation of crude oil, placing a strain on the supply chain. It has been observed that, due to rising fuel demand in certain areas, industries and commercial establishments are utilizing fuel intended for retail sale. Consequently, the Central Government has imposed this restriction to curb hoarding, black marketing, and misuse.
Meanwhile, following complaints from farmers in the state regarding difficulties in obtaining diesel, the state government had permitted the sale of diesel in cans and barrels. Currently, farmers purchase diesel in cans for tractors, power tillers, power weeders, sprayers, and diesel engines. However, a new directive from the Centre has created uncertainty about whether this facility will continue.
Amit Gupta, President of the Federation of All Maharashtra Petrol Dealers Associations, stated that containers approved under PESO norms are not readily available in the market. Consequently, petrol pump operators are facing a dilemma regarding whether or not to supply diesel to farmers in cans or barrels.
This issue has become increasingly critical with the Kharif season just around the corner. In rural areas, most agricultural operations are carried out using tractors and other diesel-powered machinery. Sowing activities must be completed within a short window following the rainfall; under these circumstances, any restrictions on diesel supply are likely to exacerbate the difficulties faced by farmers.
